Have you ever been curious about oil painting but were afraid of the cost to get started, the time it takes to learn or the space you might need? Creating small paintings has many advantages. You will learn faster, need very little space to paint (a kitchen table will do) and spend less on supplies.
I have been a "daily painter" for eight years. On most days I paint a 5"x7" or 6"x6" painting. I can usually finish a painting in a single, two hour sitting. This provides the opportunity to explore many ideas instead of spending hours and hours and many tubes of paint on a single large painting.
In this beginning oil painting class I will share with you:
- The supplies you will need to get started, how to use them and where to purchase them.
- The properties of oil paint and how best to use it for alla prima or wet into wet painting.
- Tips on brushes, what works, when and how to use them
- Tips on color mixing. How to analyze a color and create a plan to mix it.
- The basics of composition. How to grab a viewer's eye and keep them looking.
- How to create paintings your friends, family and more will want to have for themselves!
This class includes weekly live Zoom sessions, instructional PDFs and videos to assist you on your painterly path.
Basic supplies needed for class:
Something to hold your painting and a palette. Email me and we can discuss whether a pochade box or a table easel will work best for you.
Oil paint - black, white, ultramarine blue, alizarin crimson, cadmium yellow light
Brushes - Aspen long flats in sizes 2, 4, 6 are preferred but most oil painting brushes will work
Canvas panels or gesso boards sizes 5x7 or 6x8 or a 9x12 canvas pad
Odorless solvent Gamsol
A small squeeze bottle for dispensing
A jar with a lid for cleaning brushes
Paper towels
Palette knife is helpful for mixing paint and painting too!
