Teen Self Portraits

In Charlene Collins Freeman’s teen art class students had a lot of fun learning about facial proportions and how our features change with various emotional expressions. Here are some of the portraits done by these fearless students.

They started out studying shading and how the light changes as it falls on the planes of the head.

Then they studied and drew their own faces in a neutral expression.

Next, they learned about surprise and fear. Students were asked to pick one or the other emotion for their next self portrait.

Then they learned about how sadness shows up on our features.

And lastly, they studied anger.

Self portraits are notoriously difficult and for teens, who generally feel especially self critical, it can be a real challenge. We are so proud of our students who dove into these lessons and created such amazing drawings of themselves.

Bravo!
