This workshop is all about drawing textures using different kinds of pens. Each week, you’ll learn about mark making, shading and creating values for different textures. This course is for anyone who loves details and wishes to create fine intricate pieces. Due to the time limit, you will be able to trace a photo or transfer the line drawing that I’ll send you before class begins. The focus will be on rendering textures rather than drawing basic forms.

HOW IT WORKS:

Before the workshop starts I will send out a ZOOM invite for all our classes together. Each week I’ll email some reference images for you to work from. I will show you examples of techniques plus a video on how to create that day’s exercise. Then we sit and draw together. During class you can email me images of your artwork so that I can give you feedback and advice where needed. We can learn a lot from one another so it’s always wonderful to show your work to others. I strive to make this workshop very interactive.

OUTLINE and WHAT YOU NEED:

Week 1: elephant or rhino eye

Week 2: elephant foot or rhino ear

Week 3: horns or tusks

Supplies: Graphite pencil for the initial sketch, eraser. Pens: technical drawing pens (0.05, 0.1, 0.3 - Copic, Faber-Castell or Micron) or ball point pens (Bic or Zebra) or Pentel Arts Hybrid Technica pen 0.3. Fine tip fountain pens also welcome, for example Platinum carbon desk fountain pen extra fine. Drawing paper for pens (smooth, for wet media). For practice or if you don’t want to use expensive paper even white color copy paper will work for what we are going to do. I will show different pens each week.

BONUS:

By signing up for any of my classes, you are invited to a private Facebook community where you can find more inspiration, more instructional videos as well as art feedback and support. This is a safe space, only for my students, for sharing and feedback. Also, FREE open studio on Tuesday evenings. Email invites sent out at the beginning of every month.
