If you’ve been yearning to pick up a pen and/or ballpoint pen, but have found yourself a little intimidated by the fact that it doesn’t erase, then this is the course for you! Maja will show you basic steps, demonstrate a variety of pen techniques and encourage you along the way to make your creative experience smoother. In this workshop we are going to focus on ballpoint pens, how to work with one color as well as how to layer different colors to create realistic effects. You will also learn how to observe & draw textures, strengthen your understanding of form and discover how to create tonal values through mark making while drawing nature’s forms: flowers, leaves, fruit, seeds, garden critters and textures. Create your first pen masterpieces in a sketchbook and/or on individual sheets of paper!

HOW IT WORKS:

Each week I will send out an email with an invitation to Zoom, along with some reference images for you to work from. I will show you examples of artworks, a video on how to create that day’s exercise and then we sit and draw together. Of course you are welcome to draw from your own picture. You can email me images of your artwork so that I can give you feedback and advice where needed. I’m happy to do a live review of everyone’s work. We can learn a lot from one another.

WHAT YOU NEED:

A sketchbook (for wet media) such as Stillman & Birn Zeta or paper for wet media such as Bristol paper for pens.

Pens: Color ballpoint pen such as Bic pens (4 colors or more). They pens have to say ballpoint - no gel pens please! I also like Pentel Arts Hybrid Technica 0.3 & 0.4. Copic Multiliner or Micron pens - 0.05, 0.1, 0.3 (optional 0.5, 0.8 for thick lines) - these can be color as well but they draw and layer differently to ballpoint pens.

Other: pencil, eraser, sharpener.

Optional: your favorite watercolors for an underpainting or to add color to your pen drawing.

BONUS:

By signing up for any of my classes, you are invited to a private Facebook community where you can find more inspiration, more instructional videos as well as art feedback and support. This is a safe space, only for my students, for sharing and feedback. Also, FREE open studio on Tuesday evenings. Email invites sent out at the beginning of every month.
