Thursdays 10am – 12:30pm

August 27 - October 1

6 week course

$210

All levels welcome

This workshop is all about drawing animals! You’ll learn how to begin a drawing, how to see and draw forms within an animal’s shape, capture symmetry and proportions through measuring. Lastly, learn how to shade to show fir and other textures. 3 mediums: graphite, pen and color pencil. Walk away with three or more finished pieces!

My style is very detailed and rendered because it’s what comes naturally to me (it’s my happy place), but I encourage my students to embrace and work in their own style and make it the best it can be.

HOW IT WORKS:

Online using Zoom.
(For more information about how to use Zoom, click here.)

Before the workshop starts I will send out a ZOOM invite for all our classes together. Each week I’ll email some reference images for you to work from. I will show you examples of concepts, techniques, forms, and examples of artworks plus a video on how to create that day’s exercise. Then we sit and draw together. During class you can email me images of your artwork so that I can give you feedback and advice where needed. We can learn a lot from one another so it’s always wonderful to show your work to others. I strive to make this workshop very interactive.

OUTLINE and WHAT YOU NEED:

Week 1 & 2: hare, ferret or mouse - Graphite pencils (a set or 2H, HB, 2B, 6B), drawing paper, eraser, sharpener, blending stick.

Week 3 & 4: horse, dog or cat portrait - Pens: technical drawing pens (0.1, 0.5 or thicker - Copic, Faber-Castell or Micron) or ball point pens (Bic or Zebra), white or toned drawing paper, graphite pencil, eraser. Brush pen also welcome.

Week 5 & 6: birds - color pencils (Faber Castell Polychromos are my favorite), white or toned drawing paper, eraser (tombow monozero 2.3), magic tape, graphite pencils

Optional supplies: thin sketch paper such as bond paper for initial drawings. Lightbox to transfer (trace) drawing onto final paper. If you like you are welcome to use Pastelmat paper for color pencils. Transfer paper is very useful for transferring a sketch onto pastelmat paper. Gamsol (OMS) is nice as a solvent for color pencils. You would need a medium size brush for it. Other color pencils, such as prismacolor premier + colorless blending pencil or derwent lightfast pencils are welcome as well.

BONUS:

By signing up for any of my classes, you are invited to a private Facebook community where you can find more inspiration, more instructional videos as well as art feedback and support. This is a safe space, only for my students, for sharing and feedback. Also, FREE open studio on Tuesday evenings. Email invites sent out at the beginning of every month.
