Cloud 9 is thrilled to welcome our newest instructor, Soo Hong!

Soo is Cloud 9’s first instructor of abstract art. She will be offering classes in abstract drawing and abstract painting. And we are so excited!

In her own words:

My work explores the unrooted human condition, reflecting my nomadic life experience and as a person of color and immigrant who aspires to feel belonged. I am not deeply rooted in a particular culture or a place. The act of painting is analogous to nesting in the place I live and creating an intimate space. Through my works, I want to convey a sense of belonging and inclusion regardless of the differences in backgrounds.

Her first workshop at Cloud 9 is Abstract Drawing with ArtGraf (see class info below).

We are so thrilled to have her join us. Welcome Soo!

All Skill Levels Welcome

Online using Zoom.

This workshop’s goal is to free yourself and connect to your inner creativity. You will learn how to see beyond the ordinary world and translate it into abstract visuals. I will show you how to begin abstract marks and experiment with mark-making through the creative process and various techniques. The class will use Artgraf (water soluble graphite) to explore monochromatic abstraction through line, value and composition.

My abstract images are produced by my inner need to question reality, experiences and current events. Historically, abstract art has reflected a desire to express spiritual, utopian, or metaphysical ideals that cannot be expressed in traditional imagery. This class will offer a new way to experience and make art insightful, intuitive and meditative.

How It works:

You will receive a Zoom invitation for this class. At the beginning of each class, I will introduce abstract elements and examples of masters’ and contemporary artists’ artworks to show the infinite possibilities of abstraction. Later, I will demonstrate and explain drawing techniques using Artgraf. We will draw together during the class and finish an artwork per session. We will share our drawings with the class so that we can inspire each other. This is the best way to learn and will lead to meaningful connections.
