All levels welcome

Online using Zoom.
Class recording available up to 3 weeks after class ends.

This workshop is all about learning how to draw animals, specifically relationships between animals. That special bond between mother and pup, an unlikely friendship between a duck and a dog, animal siblings - wild or domesticated. You will learn how to convey emotion - how to make your animals lean in and snuggle up to one another. It’s all about expression, body language and spaces between. You will be given the freedom to work in charcoal or graphite. However those of you who are comfortable to work in watercolor and/or ink or draw with color pencil you will be welcomed to do so.

Charcoal and graphite are really fun - easy to work with and erase. You are welcome to start here and later switch to a different medium if you wish.

HOW IT WORKS:

Before the workshop starts I will send out a ZOOM invite for all our classes together. Each week I’ll email some reference images for you to work from. I will show you examples of drawing techniques, forms, and examples of artworks plus a video on how to create that day’s exercise. Then we sit and draw together. During class you can email me images of your artwork so that I can give you feedback and advice where needed. We can learn a lot from one another so it’s always wonderful to show your work to others. I strive to make this workshop very interactive.

WHAT YOU NEED:

DRY Charcoal: willow or vine (medium ) - soft / medium

Compressed charcoal, either the sticks or pencils (white and black). Please do not buy Generals - they are very hard. Personally I like the Prang charcoal pencil 600-H & 602-S, as well as Primo Blanco charcoal 59-W.

Putty/kneaded eraser

Sanded paper sharpener to get a sharp edge on your charcoal pencil or stick

Blending stick

Nitram charcoal powder is excellent for covering large areas/backgrounds (optional)

Old brush (painting oils or acrylics) can be useful for textures and blending

Graphite pencils - either a full set or just a handful of pencils. 2H, HB, 2B, 4B

Eraser - plastic eraser, I love my Tombow monozero 2.3 for fine details.

Workable or final Fixative

Paper: variety is always nice but not necessary - newsprint, bristol paper smooth or drawing/sketching pad.
