Are you captivated by maps? Maps are everywhere and there are so many different types. They help to find our way, orientate ourselves, tell a story, visualize a path, and identify where things are. They can be personal or shared with others.

This workshop explores different ways to create illustrated maps in the media you prefer. Looking at many examples, we will discuss composition and overall page design, types of hand drawn lettering, and explore stylistic variations. Discover what interests you most in recording your maps and then how to enhance the map with your pictures and design elements to create a beautiful whole. Anya and Tara will share their different artistic approaches, and provide live, real-time feedback as we work on our maps in class. Ideas will be suggested if you don’t have a specific map to work on.

We will explore different types of illustrative and figurative maps that we can draw. Traditional map elements will be addressed as well as making the maps personal and informative. Each week we will share examples for inspiration and discuss what parameters to consider in creating your own. You will have time in class to work on your own map project and get advice on how to proceed as needed. Email your progress before or during class and we’ll learn together as we share and discuss approaches and refinements. You should be able to complete at least one map during our time together.
