Seeing and Rendering Basic Forms

If you’re a beginner or would like to refresh your artistic knowledge about seeing and rendering forms, this is a workshop for you. First you’ll observe, study and draw all the basic forms: cylinder, sphere, cone, cube. Second, you’ll learn how to identify, see and draw these forms in nature. What forms and shapes make up a tomato, a tree or a flower? How do you draw an ellipse and how big should it be? Are you looking up or down on something? I will answer all your questions to help you improve your ability to see, understand and draw. This is something that is often skipped over, because it’s “boring” but it fundamental to helping you draw better!

HOW IT WORKS:

Before the workshop starts I will send out a ZOOM invite for all our lesson together, including reference images for you to work from. I will show you examples of how to draw with graphite, how to see values and form, plus a video on how to create that day’s exercise. Then we sit and draw together. During class you can email me images of your artwork so that I can give you feedback and advice where needed. We can learn a lot from one another so it’s always wonderful to show your work to others. I strive to make this workshop very interactive.

WHAT YOU NEED:

Bristol paper (ideally) or drawing paper
Graphite pencils - ideally a set with hard and soft pencils (H and B range)
Eraser - variety is always nice: putty eraser, tombow mono zero 2.3 eraser
Sharpener
Blending stick

BONUS:

By signing up for any of my classes, you are invited to a private Facebook community where you can find more inspiration as well as art feedback and support. This is a safe space, only for my students, for sharing and feedback. Also, FREE open studio on Tuesday evenings. Email invites are sent out at the beginning of every month.
