Illustrating Maps

IMG_3558.jpg

Charlene Collins Freeman has been creating illustrated maps and for years has created a map of every new city she has visited over the past several years. Illustrated maps are different than regular maps because they are meant to capture the experience of a place, not necessarily the geographical details. Illustrated maps can be of actual places or imaginary places, places visited or places we hope to visit. They can be of cities, countries, our backyard, our childhood memories, or an imaginary planet.

Come join us to learn how to create your own maps: the research and the components of maps.

10am - 3pm with a one hour break for lunch

Learn about the different elements of a map (borders, insets, legends, compass roses, icons) and how to create your own maps.

Bring your own supplies (could be watercolors, ink, color pencil, acrylic, collage)

I’ll walk you through the steps and show you how I make my maps. Come with a map in mind and ready to give it a go. Bring your iPad or laptop if you want to help with research. Your phone will do as well.

You will get a creative workout, but in a relaxed, supportive setting, where experimentation and play are encouraged while techniques and observation are emphasized.

All skill levels welcome.
