We’re all magic collectors and the world is a treasure chest of magic for us to discover and explore . You might find a magical unique flower in a jungle, a firefly on a warm night, a story about an unlikely friendship, a memory from your childhood or a fantastical scene from your imagination. This workshop is all about going on a journey into our imaginations and illustrating our experiences, stories, characters or scenes. Sketching, illustrating and painting in a sketchbook is a wonderful way to open doors to your imagination, get to know yourself better and at the same time, release the stories hidden within you. It allows you to shake off any perfectionist ideals and create from the heart with a light hand and sprinkles of humor. In this workshop, you will learn how to generate ideas, use reference images or personal experiences to guide your artistic voice and style. You will also learn about storytelling, composition, character design, how to layout a book and thumbnailing, all about bleeds, gutters and page layout/design. It is a wonderful stepping stone to the world of illustration.

“Almost all creativity involves purposeful play” A. Maslow.

HOW IT WORKS:

Each week I will send out an email with an invitation to Zoom, along with inspirational prompts such as excerpts from a story and/or reference images. I will show you examples; a quick presentation on illustration concepts/principles; a video on how to create that day’s exercise and then we sit and draw together. You are welcome to email me images of progress during class so that you can receive feedback as you go.

WHAT YOU NEED:

A sketchbook (for wet media would be ideal) or your favorite paper which later can be turned into a sketchbook, graphite pencil, color pencils for sketching, pen(s), watercolors or gouache for painting, eraser, sharpener, any pens, markers, scissors & glue or supplies you have at home.

WHAT TO EXPECT:

You’ll be sketching and painting in a medium of your choice. Each week we’ll work on a new idea filling your book with beautiful illustrations. There will be an introduction on how to paint with gouache for those interested.

BONUS: By signing up for any of my classes, you get invited to a private Facebook group where you can find more inspiration, as well as art community support. This group is only for my students. A safe space for sharing and feedback.
