Handbound Codex Journal

Friday, January 10th

Come learn to make your own handbound codex book with Debbie Wachel. These beautiful books are covered with a combination of fine Italian or Japanese decorative paper and a coordinating color European book cloth. This 92-page book is 7.25” x 5.25”, portrait orientation, and contains unlined text weight paper great for journaling and sketching. 

We will start with a review of Codex books, bookbinding basics and tool review. All materials will be provided, and bookbinding tools will be available for use. If you want to have your own tools, you may elect to buy the bookbinding kit from Amazon that is provided in the bookbinding supply list. 

The class will follow step-by-step instructions to make this book. You will amaze your friends and family by creating this lovely, professional looking book that would feel at home in Queen Victoria’s library. These books also make great gifts for your royal friends and family.

Complete printed instructions will be provided. Ideas to embellish the book and/or filling it will specialty paper (such as music paper) will also be reviewed. Be warned - book making is addictive!

All skill levels are welcome. Completion of one of Debbie’s other book making classes is helpful but not required.

Japanese Box with Hinged Lid

Join Debbie Wachel to create an elegant Japanese “Book” Box.

These gorgeous boxes are covered with Japanese Chiyogami Yuzen paper and book cloth. They are cleverly designed to be used horizontally or vertically. There is plenty of room inside to store your treasures including jewelry, photos, secret love letters or your Game of Thrones Trading cards. The inside dimensions are perfectly sized to hold four Japanese Stab Binding books or similarly sized 4”x6” journals.

The class will follow step-by-step instructions to make this precisely constructed box. You will truly amaze your friends and family at your creation! We will start with an overview of tools and materials. Japanese Yuzen paper is extraordinarily beautiful and has a long history of centuries. Complete printed instructions will be provided. Ideas to embellish the box will also be reviewed.

Class includes everything to make one elegant box measuring 5.25” x 7.25” with a depth of 2”.

Handmade Coptic Bound Art Journal

Come learn to make your very own art journal with Debbie Wachel. This class focuses on how to take your favorite pad of art paper and turn it into a wonderful bound book with the minimum of cutting. The 92-page book we make in class will be using a pad of 94lb Canson Mi Teintes Assorted Toned Drawing/Pastel paper and will be covered with Shizen, screen-printed, decorative paper. 

You will spend the day learning the essentials of making your own art journals using a 1-needle along-the-spine Coptic binding. This exposed binding technique is as durable as it is beautiful and allows the book to open completely flat. 

We will start with a review of Coptic bound books, bookbinding basics and tool review. The class will follow step-by-step instructions to make the book together.  We will also discuss how to take a pad of your favorite paper and successfully turn it into a wonderful bound book while covering some helpful tricks of the trade. 

All materials will be provided, and bookbinding tools will be available for use. If you want to have your own tools, you may elect to buy the bookbinding kit from Amazon that is provided in the bookbinding supply list

Starbook with Beaded Binding

Now for something completely different! Come learn to make this unique Starbook with Debbie Wachel. This one-of-a-kind project is ideal as a special occasion book for a birthday, shower, wedding, holiday, or any other festive occasion. Closed, the Starbook is a beautiful presentation piece with Shizen screen printed decorative paper covers, a beaded binding and a ribbon closure. When open, this spectacular Starbook will explode into a visual delight of a seven-pointed star held open with the ribbon closure. The Starbook has 14 beautiful pockets to fill with appropriate keepsakes: photos, ornaments, cutouts, artwork, the possibilities are only limited by your imagination! This fabulous Starbook, with an opened dimension of 15² diameter, makes it ideal as a table centerpiece. 

You will spend the day learning how to make this beautiful book that will use a 2-needle binding technique. The class will follow step-by-step instructions to make the book together. A variety of rubber stamps, ink pads, beads, and ribbons will be available to customize your book. You will not be making inserts for the book in this since each student will want to customize their book inserts in their own unique way. Ideas for inserts will be provided in the class. This is a spectacular book that is guaranteed to delight and is a memorable keepsake.
